Best helmet is first helmet
October 19, 2018
After taking a welding class as a makerspace, I decided to take the plunge and picked up a cheap tig machine. I wanted the best safety gear so after some research I decided on the 3M speedglas. Compared to the HF hood I used in the class this thing is amazing
Pros
  • comfortable, clear wide angle view
Cons
  • none yet...kinda looks like a Kylo Ren mask from Star Wars. I have to be extra evil when I use it otherwise people will think i'm a wuss...

Very nice shield.
April 22, 2018
Welded for years with a Speedglas utility. And while the headgear does seem very flimsy and prone to breakage this 9000x is very very nice. It does catch yellow and red strobes from pretty far away it's workable.

Good Quality
June 24, 2016
Had and still have a 9002X and been hearing about the 9100 series having the tack mode (shade specified, tack, shade 5, shade 3) so ended up purchasing the 9100X. Seems to be as good as Speedglas gets which is great! Fast shipping and came with everything Cyberweld said it came with. Overall very pleased.
Pros
  • Tack, grind and optional "fixed" mode with side windows.
Cons
  • Headgear (very comfortable) was not hard to get it where I wanted it but not the easiest either.

Great Buy
November 13, 2015
I forked up the money to purchase the 9100X for my friend because he is getting married. It's his gift from me, but I'm almost tempted to just keep it for myself because I love it. I def. wish I had something like this when I was welding. I love the visibility and the look of it. I'm jealous. Makes me think I should get married so I can buy myself one..... haha just kidding. I'm sure he won't be disappointed!
Pros
  • Visibility
  • Versatility

3M Speedglas
August 30, 2015
I bought the original version of the Speedglas, the model 9000X, about 15 years ago. During that time I've been pleased with the product and, other than batteries, I have had no problems. But the helmet was showing its age and the lens of that original 9000X was getting dark areas, so I started checking out newer AD helmets. The best modern AD helmet I could find was the new Speedglas model 9100X. Actually, if you don't use magnifying lenses, maybe one of the larger viewing window models would be the absolute best, I wanted the standard 2x4 window. The newer suspension or headgear on the new 9100X is more comfortable and easy to adjust. The lens is very clear and bright, and easy to adjust. Overall, I'm very pleased with this helmet.
Pros
  • There is a frame installed inside to accept the standard 2x4 "cheater" lens. This is an improvement over sandwiching it behind the plastic cover plates.
Cons
  • Hardhat mounting is going to be more difficult. The standard plastic bolts that I used to mount my older 9000X model to the hardhat lugs won't fit this helmet. Instead, I need to buy a dedicated hardhat mounting kit.

March 26, 2015
Used HF auto-darkening and a hobart passive lense for the last 8 years. I weld approx. 2 hrs./ wk. maintenance / construction / teaching. Love this helmet. Would've loved the XX model but really stretched to get this one. Now I want to get more time to weld. I love the clarity, it does help you to be a better welder.
Pros
  • clarity, helmet coverage, ease of replacement parts / lenses,
Cons
  • price, as always, gotta watch the pennys

March 3, 2015
Used this hood for only an hour today and well...its really not that great. The headgear sucks so far complete PIA to get used to and it actually gave me a headache after only an hour. Th clarity is phenominal though. But theres hoods out there are other hoods out there with the same optical quality for half the price. Just me 2 cents. To be fair ive oy used it once for an hour so ill use it a while longer and post another reply
Pros
  • Clarity is amazing
Cons
  • Headgear sucks and it gets burn holes pretty easy

Great investment if you weld for a living.
February 26, 2015
Been welding for 40 years now and have always used a Fibre metal standard helmet. Finally decided to try an auto darkening helmet and after much internet research went for the 3M 9100x. Wow, what an improvment! It took a few days to get the head gear adjusted just right but other than that it's been a great investment. Well worth the price!
Pros
  • works as advertised
Cons
  • I thought i was buying an american made product but it's made in sweden. At least it's not made in china.

February 7, 2015
I finally decided to purchase a speedglas 9100x...After using this hood, and having other hoods Like miller, hobart, jackson, rhino, and harbourfreight and over 20yrs of welding expierience. I can assure you that there's nothing better out there with such quality, comfort, and clarity.... I will never go back to any other brand....It's worth every dollar!!!!!! And your eyes, neck and face will feel the difference immidiately. ..
Pros
  • lense clarity ,comfort and balance of welding helmet is unlike anything. ....nothing compares to a speedglas. ...Now I understand why they are #1

Dont worry, This is the right choice
August 11, 2014
I was looking for a new auto-darkening helmet with grind mode after years of burning with the fixed shade then switching to the full face grind shield for grinding. Looked at the top miller models along with the 9100X. Some speedglas bias was part of my decision making process when selecting this helmet. Obviously helmet selection is 100% operator comfort based and each helmet should be tested for fit/functionality. Unfortunately, the internet lacks the tangibility of in-store purchases and you need to base you decision off reviews like this one. This is an excellent helmet. From the second you pick it up you can feel quality craftsmanship throughout the helmet system. Buy it! you will not have buyers remorse. The hobby/light industrial welder will have this helmet for a life time, The professional will have a top quality helmet that will hold up to extreme work conditions for many years. I must say, an external grind mode button would make this product an undisputed 5 star product, although I could see issues with spatter/hot slag nesting on the button somehow...Please see pros/cons for bulleted comments.
Pros
  • -Overall low profile, everything is more form fitting than the previous Speedglas models
  • -Side view lenses are nice. I was apprehensive at first anticipating glare from the sun or other light source above work area. We'll see how it works with other welders in the area burning on the sides.
  • -New head gear is awesome...takes some getting used to but the improved ergonomics are immediately evident.
  • -All major parts are easily removed and replaced with parts list included
Cons
  • -Grind mode must be turned on from inside the helmet holding the shade button down for 2 seconds... Grind mode must be turned off before arc start.. Not really a big deal...

May 29, 2014
I bought an early version of the Speedglas helmet many years ago, (15 or 20). It has never died. It still works well, but I can't seem to get harness parts or protective lenses for it. I indulged myself with a new, top line version, and so far I'm very pleased. I like that the #3 and #5 shade can be locked on, something I always wished for in the old version, the sensitivity controls are more intuitive and easier to adjust, there is adequate space to wear a respirator to fit under the helmet, (a custom I wish I had adopted much early), and the harness design is really good. The harness adjustable to a degree that is a little confusing, but once I played with it a bit I find the helmet to be really stable and comfortable and it stays where I need it when I'm moving my head into awkward positions. I have a very large head and it had plenty of adjustment. The best helmet suspension I've experienced. I hope it is sturdy, it looks a little light. The helmet is heavier than a conventional helmet, but not a lot, and, if you're trying to get a lot of work done, and done well, the extra weight of the auto-darkening device is absolutely worth it.

Comfortable and great on the eyes, grind mode could be easier...
April 18, 2014
I am a pipefitter/welder and weld about 7 hours a day. The hood works great as for most of the functions. Headgear is extremely comfortable. Viewing area is the perfect size. Presently I am welding in a pipe fabrication shop; mig, stick, tig. The reason for the 3 stars is grind mode. Our welds get a visual inspection before they go out the door. All tacks must be removed or ramped to look like a seamless weld. The grind mode is a royal pain. You have to cycle through every level of sensitivity to get to grind mode, then cycle through again to get back to your weld setting. A button just for grind mode on/off like Miller would make this hood perfect.
Cons
  • Need a button for grind mode on/off.

Works great, fits great.
April 4, 2014
This is my first high end auto dark welding helmet. Was worth the money. Have miged with a fixed shade and tiged with an inexpensive auto. I do a lot of thin low amperage tig the sensitivity and shades available works well. Best feature, aside from the quality of the helmet overall, for me is the peripheral vision made possible with the side windows. Helps maneuvering around in car welding roll cages, can leave the helmet on.
Pros
  • Easily adjustable sensitivity and shade darkness. Highest sensitivity levels work well with low amperage tig. Peripheral vision with helmet on. Lot of adjustability for fitment on head.
Cons
  • The stop adjustment for the position of the helmet when down is only on the right side. Feels like the left side twists as there is no stop. Would like to see this on both sides.

Excellent Helmet
January 21, 2014
After hours of researching helmets, I decided on the 9100X and it has proven to be an excellent decision. I've only used it a couple of times, but the quality and consistency of my welds has improved 100%. Optics are top notch and the fit is great. I'm still working on getting the knob tight enough to maintain the helmet in the home position, but other than that I have zero complaints. Cyberweld has excellent prices and shipping was relatively quick.
Pros
  • -Optics
  • -Fit and finish
  • -Starter kit (5 outer/2 inner protection plates, and 1 sweatband included)

Outstanding Helmet
November 18, 2013
This is a well designed helmet, very well thought out.The optics are superb, a clear and balanced wide view for sure. Adjustments for head fit are numerous and sensible, I have no problem getting the helmet to stay where I want it to. The side windows, front vents and wider rear opening makes cheaper helmets seem claustrophobic and suffocating. After using a $50 auto-dark helmets for TIG welding nothing compares to this.
Pros
  • -Visibility
  • -Fit
  • -Cyberweld price
Cons
  • none so far

Really nice welding hood.
October 31, 2013
It's a really good welding hood. I have been welding for thirty years and this is the first hood I've used with Auto dark lens. It takes a little time to get use too. Now I really like this feature, easy way too start a weld.
Pros
  • I like the way the hood is made. It looks smaller than most hood but it covers more area. Nice feature when your welding overhead.
Cons
  • none at this time.

  • The shipping was quick and the cost was fair.
Cons

Great Helmet
September 2, 2013
Just started to weld and did a lot of research and spoke with a few folks all recommended to purchase a good helmet to protect your eyes. Like the large view and the sides have a tinted panel which gives you a very clear view not the tunnel vision or feeling from the other helmets. The cost was a big question mark but after I tried the helmet , I can tell you the extra $$ are worth it!!
Pros
  • Lots...... large viewing area, side tinted panels, 3 modes of operation along with 3 sensors
Cons
  • head adjustment takes time to get use to it.

I have been using the 9100X for a few years and love it! It's light, comfortable and has a great clarity! I was a Miller man till I tried this hood. Now I'm Speedglas all the way! I use this hood 4-6hrs a day and it never gets heavy.
Pros
  • Light weight, durable, reliable, man just too many good things to say!
Cons
  • A bit bulky in tight places, and the head gear could b a bit stronger
